After Independence, India had got so much enamoured with the West that for every socio-political problem, Indians were looking for the solution in the western model. But Srila A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada had a strong and deep conviction that the only solution to every problem is the spiritualization of human consciousness. But due to tremendous western influence, Indians were gradually getting uprooted from their spiritual foundation and were becoming godless.

Srila Prabhupada, in order to educate spiritually deficient mass in bhakti wisdom, started writing Back to Godhead magazine and commentaries on Srimad Bhagvatam. For printing and publishing them, he established his office at ISKCON Chhipiwara temple, Old Delhi (formerly known as Radha Krishna temple) in the early 1960s. This office cum room was offered to Srila Pabhupada by Pandit Shri Krishna Sharma, Honorary Secretary to the  century-old religious society Sri Nawal Prem Sabha Trust. He would commute to Delhi from Vrindawan for preaching, printing and publishing. During these visits, he would stay in his small room at the Chhipiwara temple. His room is located just above the altar of Shri Shri Radha Vallabha ji.

In this room, he used to sit for long hours typing and writing tirelessly on Back to Godhead magazine. He used to get them printed at OK press located in the same locality. His Divine Grace also began the stupendous task of translating the first canto of Srimad Bhagavatam in the room of ISKCON Chhipiwara temple. And in the morning and evening, he would give discourses on the Bhagavatam to all the temple’s visitors. Apart from these, he used to meet influential social and political leaders to preach the teachings of Srimad Bhagwad Gita. Also, despite extreme summer heat of Delhi, Srila Prabhupada used to distribute the copies of Back to Godhead magazine in the Delhi streets, government offices, tea stalls, shopping areas all by himself. Due to overexposure to extremely hot weather of Delhi, Srila Prabhupada lost consciousness and got collapsed on road. Another unpleasant incident happened when he got hit by the bull on Delhi streets.

In Delhi, he was doing everything from writing, collecting money for printing, buying paper, dealing with the printer, proof reading and selling them too. In this way, he was resolutely and tirelessly trying to share the massage of Krishna in every forum possible. But unfortunately, he didn’t get any tangible response from anybody in Delhi. They were apathetic about and disinterested in spirituality. To top it all, during this time, he was steeped in poverty with virtually no support and no money. But all these reverses didn’t dampen his zeal and determination to continue with his literary activities in the room of ISKCON Chhipiwara temple.

In this very room, Srila Prabhupada had actually sown the seed of the world wide Hare Krishna movement. In this room, he planned his campaign to distribute the holy name of Krishna to every continent. His indomitable spirit for accomplishing his spiritual master’ mission and his intense connection with Krishna eventually took him to the West where he inspiring the millions of people to embrace the path of spiritual love for God.

Srila Prabhupada listed this Chhipiwara room as his office address in his diary on the Jaladuta. It, therefore, becomes a ‘must see’ for all the devotees who visit Delhi.
